NAMFREL officers observed the August 20, 2009 presidential election in Afghanistan as members of the international observer team of Bangkok-based Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL), currently headed by NAMFREL council member and former NCR chairperson Mr. Damaso Magbual.

Mr. Paolo Maligaya, Senior Operations Associate, was part of the long-term observer team and was deployed in the northern province of Badakhshan, while NAMFREL secretary general, Mr. Eric Alvia, was part of the short-term observer mission and was deployed in Parwan province.

ANFREL sent a smaller batch of observers for the planned November 7, 2009 run-off election, which included NAMFREL projects committee chair Ms. Corazon Ignacio.
